What are SPIE and Optica

SPIE is the international society for optics and photonics.

SPIE was founded in 1955 and was at that time called "the Society of Photographic Instrumentation Engineers", hence the name SPIE.

SPIE of today has more than 250 000 members in 155 countries. The society works for promoting science and education in optics and photonics. SPIE is a non-profit organization that every year supports education, interdisciplinary activities, career growth and outreach with millions of dollars.

SPIE organizes conferences, like for example SPIE Photonics West, SPIE Optics and Photonics, and SPIE Photonics Europe. SPIE also has a number of scientific journals, for example Optical Engineering, Journal of applied remote sensing, Journal of biomedical optics, etc. The publications are accessed through SPIE digital library.

Optica is an Optical Society.

Optica was founded in 1916 as "the Optical Society of America", hence the name OSA. Today OSA is named Optica and is an international society with members from all over the world.

Optica is a professional association in optics and photonics with 18 500 individual members and 250 businesses, which in total makes up more than 220 000 members in 175 countries.

Optica organizes meetings and conferences, for example CLEO, Optica Frontiers in Optics and Biomedical Optics (BIOMED). Optica also has a number of journals, for example Applied Optics, Optics Express and Journal of the Optical Society of America A and B. All publications are accessed through Optica's digital library, Optics InfoBase.

The student chapter.

The Lund University SPIE/Optica student chapter is registered under both SPIE and Optica. We get grants to organize activitites for career development, networking and promoting optics and photonics in different ways. Join the chapter to get involved in the optics community at Lund Univeristy!

As a student member of SPIE and Optica you can apply for grants to go to conferences, win awards for your research and get to know people in your field from all around the world.

The Lund University SPIE/Optica student chapter sends one or two students to SPIE Optics and Photonics in San Diego, funded by SPIE, and one or two students to Optica Frontiers in Optics, funded by Optica, every year. Get involved in the chapter and it might be you going next time!
