Real time assessment of liver function

There are no conventional modalities in the diagnosis of parenchymal liver damage after chemotherapy or due to chronic liver disease. Thus, there is a need to develop a specific technique that objectively could be used to assess the condition of human liver tissue.

When liver resection is performed it is crucial to leave a certain portion of the liver for its regeneration in order to avoid liver failure after the surgery. On the other hand, all tumour tissue has to be removed. Another clinical situation is when the liver is infiltrated with metastases originating from e.g., intestinal cancer. In all these clinical situations, it would be very valuable with a reliable complementary guiding tool both for the characterisation of the liver tissue as well as to find the borders in between the tumours and the healthy liver tissue.

Our aim is to develop new methods for intra-operative real time assessment in liver tissue.
